When carried out under proper conditions, anionic polymerizations exmplify living polymerizations. The reaction scheme comprises initiation and propagation, but neither termination nor transfer reactions. The number of growing sites remains constant , and equal to the number of initiator molecules introduced. As a consequence, the number average degree of polymerization is determined by the mole ratio of monomer conberted and initiator used. Furthermore, the molecular weight distribution within such a sample is rather narrow. Once the polymerization is completed, active sites remain at the chain end. various opportunities are thus provided to synthesize well-defined macromolecules of known molecular weight and low polydipersity.
