The 11th Edgar Snow Symposium,cosponsored by the China Society for Peo-ple’s Friendship Studies(CSPFS)and the Edgar Snow Centre of Beijing University,was held in Beijing on October 8,2004.To carry for ward the spirit of Snow in the exchanges between the peo-ple of China and the U.S.and extend friendship toa cause of common concern,the Chinese and the American sponsors agreed upon“Progress and Achievements Made in the Field of Life Sciences—A To pic of Common Concern to China and the United States”as the theme of the symposium.Both sides attached great importance to the symposium.More than 30 American friends in-cluding Mr.John Deadwyler,chairman of the U.S.Edgar Snow Memorial Fund,and Dr.Martha Gilliland and Mr.Bill French,chancellor and vicechancellor of the University of Missouri,KansasCity,came to Beijing to attend the symposium.As we entered into the21st century,peoplehave shown more and more interest in exploringlife sciences.Scientists try to find new genes fromthe large amount of genome sequencing resultsand study their functions and network of controlso that they can develop new medicines and im-prove the effectiveness of medicines with the aimof achieving one day the prevention and treatmentof diseases such as AIDS,cancer,heart disease,diabetes,and other contagious and infectious dis-eases threatening human lives at present.Thisemerging science will raise the quality of people’slife and their work efficiency,and bring profoundrevolutionary changes to the life and productionof mankind.In the last few years,the medical cir-cles of China have paid special attention to thestudy of genes.The National Institute of Biologi-cal Sciences has been founded in Beijing underthe auspices of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.It has organized international conferences on lifesciences.In Kansas City of the United States,thehometown of Edgar Snow,the School of Biologi-cal Sciences has also been set up to carry out re-searches in this area.We share a common aspira-tion,that is,to enhance mutual understanding inour studies of this emerging science and promoteexchanges and cooperation.The symposium was held at the Health Sci-ence Centre of Beijing University.Huang Hua,WuWeiran and Ling Qing,honorary president,honor-ary vice president and president of the CSPFS,and Ke Yang,vice president of Beijing University,were present at the symposium,at which Presi-dent Ling Qing,Chairman Deadwyler and Chan-cellor Gilliland spoke.Dr.Betty M.Dress,dean ofUMKC School of Medicine,delivered a report enti-tled“Global Health,Multicultural Health andMedical Education in the United States”.Reportsentitled“Integration—the Future of Medicine”by Gao Qizhi,president of the International In-stitute of Oriental Medicine,Kansas City,“Dis-covery of Novel Human Functional Genes”byProf.Ma Dalong,director of Human DiseaseGene Research Centreof Beijing University,“Tra-ditional Chinese Medicine”by Prof.Li Pingpingof Beijing Hospital of Oncology,and“Our Ex-periences during SARS Epidemic in Beijing”byProf.Zhan Siyan of School of Public Health ofBeijing University,were also made at the sym-posium.To consolidate the results of the symposium,Prof.Li Pingping was invited as the18th Snowvisiting professor to teach at the University ofMissouri.The two sides will go a step further todiscuss concrete cooperation programmes.Extend Friendship to a Common Cause——On 11th Symposium on Edgar Snow
