On October19,2004,at a grand cer-emony held in the Hall of the Austrian National Council,Dr.Anna E Haselbach,president of the Austrian Federal Council,conferred Rosthorn Medal upon Professor Du Wentang of the Institute of World Historyunder the Chinese Academy of Social Sci-ences.Second President of the Austrian Na-tional Council Barbara Prammer,Chinese am-bassador to Austria Lu Yonghua,as well aspersonages of the Austrian diplomatic andcultural circles attended the ceremony.Arther Rosthorn,Austro-Hungarian min-ister to the Qing Court in1900,was then theonly foreign diplomat who openly opposedthe Eight-Power Allied Forces suppressingthe Chinese people.After returning home,Arther Rosthorn dedicated himself to thecause of promoting understanding and friend-ship between Austria and China.WithRosthorn as the symbol,Austria set up thismedal to award those who“have made spe-cial contribution to Austria-China relations”.Before Prof.Du,former Austrian PresidentRudolf Kirchschlaeger,as well as Huang Hua,Wang Bingnan,Zhang Wenjin and Chen Haosuhad been awarded the medal.Du Wentang,69years old,postgraduatestudent majoring in German literature gradu-ated from the Department of Western Lan-guages and Literature of Peking University in1963.He has been mainly engaged in re-searches on German Nazi ideology,and hastranslated by himself or together with othersand edited History of Austria,On the Chi-nese and the Austrians,The Diary of JacobRosenfeld in China and Book Series of Aus-trian History and Culture.In2003he wonthe China BookPrize.Attheceremony Dr.AnnaE.Haselbach recalled the friendly cooperationbetween the Austrian Association for Promo-tion of Friendship and Cultural Relations withChina and Du Wentang in the past25years,and spoke highly of Du’s outstanding contribu-tion to enhancing mutual understandingbetweenAustrian and Chinese people.Du Wentang Awarded Austrian Rosthorn Medal
